Simple Contact Workshop in NYC - Fall 2015

For NYC practitioners and others who want to visit:

I'd heard rumors, but I first actually saw Barrett speak in a video of the recent San Diego Pain Summit. He didn't use a lot of slides and his knowledge of movies, TV and the literature surrounding his subject just seemed to pour from him. No jargon; just easy cultural references to relate his musings to us.

I thought, “This man is a clinician, and, as he says, he's funny but most of all curious. I have the sense that anything he says is either backed by a rational argument and/or mixed with a self-deprecation I can relate to and emulate. I wish he were my therapist. I wish he were nearby.

I also wanted a different class where the client leads their own therapeutic process through movement, instead of dumping the latest manual, biomechanical techniques I learned over a weekend on them and then forgetting about it.

Ohio's not close to New York City so I'm bringing him here.

I'd love for other members of the Soma Simple community to attend. Please spread the good word! :clap2:

Great post Minki. I appreciate the compliment.

For those who don't know, Minki was trained in the method of care known as Rolfing. I was personally treated by one of his colleagues, Austin McElroy, twelve times.

I know Minki is contacting a few Structural Integrators in the New York area.

Someone who taught me soft tissue technique went through a course of treatment with Ida Rolf. He said that when she did his gums it made him cry. He was very deeply influenced by her though and used nothing but soft tissue work on his own patients.

If there was a "weakness" in Rolf's approach to change it was her apparent insistence that all the reachable connective tissue be manipulated and/or manually managed.

She was charismatic though, whatever that is. It didn't hurt that she treated Fritz Perls and he consequently lionized her skills. I understand he referred her to as Miss Elbow. I might be mistaken, but I don't think so.

It's an interesting foundation.

This is quite local to me, but I'm not sure I can justify the cost*. Perhaps a discount for being another target for the audience to throw things at? After all, it's much harder to hit two moving targets.

Funny. I never heard of the nickname before. Fascia was definitely Ida Rolf's modus operandi for change and 'elbowing' the client into an ideal structure.

The photo in Minki's link was taken during the course I taught on Vancouver Island off the west coast of Canada. I think I was demonstrating on Diane at that moment.

In any case, several of the writers here attended that workshop and met my son and (then) new daughter-in-law.

I've learned a few things since.

No, it wasn't Diane but I had a feeling it was a woman with bilateral CTS. It was ten years ago (nearly) but I seem to remember she had no pain at the end of the course.

Great course and venue. Not a bad country, either!!
