I was sent this blog recently and have just started getting into it. Many here will find excellent fodder. There is even a long entry on torture (May '05)
What a treasure. We should all be examining all aspects of pain, from every social vantage point, the way this guy does, from outside in, while trying to understand it as intricately (detailedly) as possible as well as categorically in broad brush strokes from inside out.
There are lots of links, examinations of gender differences, inherent anatomical differences (did you know there were five.. count'em, FIVE counted kinds of congenital insensitivity to pain? I didn't..) discussions of ion channels, case studies etc. etc.. There's even an explanation in there about why fair-skinned redheads are more sensitive to pain.. they have a unique receptor. It's keeping me quite busy just reading the entries and I've not got to the links yet.

From this blogger, I have just discovered the word "pleonasm." At first I thought my eyes were tired, and checked to see if my brain had scrambled "neoplasm." But no.. so I looked it up:
pleonasm: The use of more words than are needed to give the sense, e.g., see with one's eyes: pleonastic adj.; pleonastically adv.: Late Latin pleonasmus from Greek pleonasmos from pleonazo, be superfluous.
Here we all are, trying to write about the intensely subjective and non-verbal phenomenon/phenonema of pain. We can be forgiven for a bit of pleonasm from time to time, I should think.. [IMG]smile.gif[/IMG]

I enjoy this blog also. You'll notice one of the links is to Aydede's bibliography. We had a nice discussion long ago about one of his essays.
