When I began this self-imposed, daily assignment to contribute a thought to the conversation on Soma Simple I decided it would differ in two ways from the writing I’d done previously: 1) It would be brief and 2) I would not participate in any discussion that followed.

I wanted to post something that the reader might offer their colleagues, mainly in the way of a brief but provocative statement.

These days in the clinic I focus on brevity in my speech - mainly because I hear so many people speaking repeatedly and endlessly about, well, nothing of specific interest to me and certainly not related to practice. I find myself silently translating whole conversations into a very few words and using non-verbal gestures that indicate clearly what I need or want next.

Try it and you’ll find that others begin to actually listen when you speak and then they attend to your movements when you choose to make them.
