Hi all;
Do you think electrotherapy procedures used by significant number of physiotherapists all over the globe may have negative impacts on our Environment ?

Emad,
All apparatuses using electrity have an impact on environment, of course.
A normal unit eats around 100W but the energy used to stimulate tissues is around 0.5 W. The ratio is very poor!
Well Bernard;
However the example you gave i do not understand very well .
what i meant by the question , take for example Infra Red rays used as heat source , Do these rays damage our environment , i mean these methods related to physics of our electrotherapy .
Another example is the short waves ,even may have negative effects on therapists bodies .

Certainly short wave and micowave are under suspicion - the use of short wave was banned in one hospital near our border with NSW because of the risk to therapists.
Microwave is reported to carry a risk of eye damage if applied to the face near the eyes and it may be dangerous for males if it is applied near genitals.
For the dubious benefit they offer and unknown risks, they ar enot used in the public hospitals here at present. Infrared irradiation has not been used for many years in any form; not for any known danger but patients can use it at home if they want to.
In our Territory. electrotherapy is used minimally; it is expensive and benefits are uncertain. we would rather spend money on items that are known to offer benefits.

Hi Nari;
you are absouletely right , it seems most of electortherapy methods have negative impacts on the human being body.

Emad,
I can't be so categorical. It helped some of my patients to learn coping with pain. It helps them with electrical accommodation. It is not a only a placebo effect!
yes bernard ;
you said it hepled patietns to learn coping wih pain only , but not eleminating the main cause of the probelm.
please what do you mean electrical accomodation, and why using that electrical accpomodation.

Emad,
Sometimes, patient are sent for electrotherapy and I use it as a transient for something better.
Sometimes I use it to push the patient to accept electricity (support) and then he will cope in a better manner his pain.
I use it, now, very rarely!
Bernard:
i think your words full of many symbols which i can not understand .
Or , do you sometimes the consumer sent for electro , and you tell him/her you will give the electro and at the same time you give advices or any type of manual therapy.

Emad,
You're right there my thoughts are often symbolic.
If a patient is sent to the office with an electro prescription.
1/ I can send him to another PT.
2/ I can try to change his way of thinking about electro.
If I take the second option then some sessions are lost with electro but learnt with education?
It is a kind of adaptation?
But you can use electro with scared people. It help some who are scared of PT. It is in this case a sort of hand-off treatment :?
Hi Bernard:
yes, you are right in your dealing and handling of pewople who come with prescribed elector , i do not accept at all to go through treatment according to others decisions.
May be electro is placebo in most cases it get good outcomes.
cheers
