Interesting link. Probably has lots to do with pain in some people.
On another note, I read recently about a study that showed photos of faces to people. The faces were gradated from neutral to expressing pain(or was it sadness?), in a series. Those who could see the pain in the faces closer to neutral were considered more emotionally intelligent, and the ones who couldn't see pain in the faces until quite a bit later in the series of pictures, were considered less emotionally intelligent. The study went so far as to say that this test could predict who had 'psychopathic' tendencies (unresponsive to/couldn't register facial expressions of pain.)
I wonder sometimes if pain/expressions of pain, emotional or physical or anything in between, is the person having an inner dialogue with themselves more than anything else.. trying to convince themselves of something.. what? That they are alive? That they are not 'psychopathic' or unresponsive to themselves? Or maybe they are and the pain is the only sane or real or organic expression they possess? Hmmnn..don't quite know where I am going with this... I'll ponder it a bit more.
