This is always a great question, circuting in my head.
I see many people pissed off about our health care system (in USA) in that insurance and physician are ruling their health care. They don't get choices and don't get to make a decision. They are circulating in the medical system from one practitioner to another and another...
Another aspect of the system is that many are comfortable with the system and don't like to make a decision, which pisses ME off
===> In the situation, we are valuable in that we could empower them to take responsibility for their own health.
===> We need to realize what are this person's needs and to be an educator.
Good therapists I respect are all good educators. Especially they educate patients to be responsible for their care. Before the rule is established, I don't like to put my hands-on them. My manual therapy rule.
Just some thoughts.
What are our limits?
I guess whatever limits we place on ourselves; plus whatever our training has 'dictated' with respect to drug advice-giving, XRs etc.
We might limit our skills unconsciously by holding onto outdated clinical practice; thereby not offering the optimal benefit to patients. Determining best/optimal pracitice is very difficult.
The requested qualities?
Honesty
Open mindedness
Caution re dogma
Listening skills
No patronising/condescension
Humour
Attention to a reasonable degree of EBP
Zooming in and out as per assessment requirements.
Attend continuing education as available.
Teach colleagues and patients and doctors at every opportunity.
Amen

Nari,
Good lists. I agree.
Seeing outdated practitioners every day in my clinic is very sad.

Salut les Somasimplers,
I agree with all and listening to the advises of Nari, I think that Takao is about to become optimist and enthusiast; Show them your working hands! Let them try the effectiveness of hands on caring and they will smile again!
Give them intelligent hands!
