This post is mostly to detail my appreciation for having taken Barrett's course today. I have been studying his material for roughly one year, and have had the good fortune of working beside Mr. Jon Newman for slightly longer. Despite all of the studying, reading, and head thumping, there was deeper understanding that occurred on my end today. I also hope that this thread will draw attention from any of my classmates from Madison today as I am interested in hearing/reading your thoughts.
From my previous studies of Barrett's work, I considered myself "armed with some understanding", but "dangerous for attempting without full understanding". Just as I mentioned to you, Barrett, many of our colleagues seem armed (with some understanding of how the body works), and dangerous with it (be it that the information/education we often provide seems to be deleterious). In support of this idea, here is that article that I mentioned to you at the end of the seminar today...
Moseley GL. Nicholas MK. Hodges PW. A randomized controlled trial of intensive neurophysiology education in chronic low back pain. [Clinical Trial. Comparative Study. Journal Article. Randomized Controlled Trial] Clinical Journal of Pain. 20(5):324-30, 2004 Sep-Oct.
Because I am relatively green at this, and have not yet acquired Newman's link mastery; the best I can do is give you the vital info and hope you search further. Don't worry, you can still take credit for it tomorrow in Milwaukee (Algonquin for "the good land"). You just might not want your students to read this...
Thanks for the seminar,
Wes
