View Full Version : Neurodynamics Harms
Hi all ;
Another point for those Manipulators ,they criticize Neural Mobilisations/Neurodynamics saying there may be harms/complications ,but they do NOT have the studies/researches/evidences now !
Any one has study concerning Neurodynamics harms ?Personally, I have NOT !
Please attach or past it here !

Emad,
Of course some neurodynamics movements may hurt. Take a simple SLR made with strength/speed!
Actually , i am Not speaking/talking about technical point of view .
I like attaching here articles /abstracts/researches concerning Neurodynamics :
Comlipcations
Risks
Sideffects
Such as Cervical Manipulation Complications (stroke ,artery dissection .........)
When i try to search using the Experssion Manipulation complications ,my search gives real studies ,for neurodynamics no .

emad,
This may be partly due to the fact that neurdynamic treatment is, in the greater scheme of things, still relatively new and poorly studied.
Michael Shacklock himself would the first to warn about just how harmful this type of treatment can be - although I don't think you could cause a stroke.

Quite correct ,we may discover complications/harms/sideffects /flaring from neural mobilizations in the future .
Personally , i do not expect seeing serious complications from neurodynamics ,however i do remember 2 years in the past i tried to test severe lumbar pain patient using slump test , and apply any neurodynamics based on slump ,which resulted in more complication pain severity , this was really boring , un-believable pain flaring up .

emad,
I have used neurodynamics in one form or the other for about four years. During that time, I have used them on almost every patient I see.
Patients who go for massages flare up, those who are under the exercise regime (the 3 lots of 15 reps style) can flare, and remain painful. Almost anything physiotherapists do can flare up pain; neurodynamics are no different.
Where people go wrong, as far as I can see, is they treat nerves as muscles and think of n/dynamics as exercises. They are neither. This is why David Butler prefers to speak of movements, not exercises, to get away from the mindset of constant repetition.
No patient who has followed what I set for homework in terms of movements has flared, because I try to tell them what flaring means, and how it can be caused. Those who came back and reported worse pain usually exceeded the limits I set (the "more is better" myth), and sheepishly admitted that the movements felt so good they did more and more.
Slump is a particularly stressful movement; and something I would never use on an acute patient until I got to know their CNS better. The only slump manouevre I might try is relaxed sitting, try a little bit of neck flexion if relaxed sitting does not increase pain, and if OK, try some slow knee extension (just sliding a leg forward, slowly). Nothing more.
If you keep in mind the CNS and PNS in a sort of visual imagery as you intervene with a patient (forget about joints and muscles) it helps to realise the tensioning factor. So much we do creates neural tension....
Nari
Nari;
The culture affects so much our neurodynamic approach,and generally our prrofession .
Here ,still there are 2 features among people of culture which cause detrioration of may patient ,first is the thinking /culture of people that move as you could ,this is extremely bad ,the other feature i think you know it "pain means progress" ,some of them think pain means good progress .
The point which i can NOT skip over ,physicians and doctors illiteracy (sorry for calling it like that ) ,they still advise patients to move in a manner which is for us a flaring up manner ( like repitation and manner,speed...)
They still with their undergraduate studies and knowledge ,they are not stopping progress ,furthermore they stop cars from running ,they stand in front of cars like walls ,and sometimes they hinder progress by their knowledge ,and i experience great difficulty to address their mis-dealing and mis-working .
To be fair ,few of doctors are working within their scope of practice and ethically ,give us chance to apply our role ,those who do NOT feel our professionalism ,efficacy/competency doe not threat their economy .
Cheers
