Joking with/at patients !

Hi All;

First of all, i have to say i respect any human being from any culture ,but sometimes the patients believe ,assume ,imagine and think certain stories and beliefs which i can not laugh at sometimes.

Even the language they use ,of course depends on culture,sometimes the scientific words are funny.

Anyway, a story happened with me with a stroke patient, the hopital discharged the patient after 3 weeks of onset,a private doctor visited her in her house told her make the lower half of the body higher than the upper half to push blood more to the brain and improving the muscle power !!!

Have you experienced funny language /stories with your patients??

When I came to Canada, I spoke English quite well, but my "professional language" had been strictly dutch. This was a problem at times.
When I announced to a lady that she might need a cervical manipulation, she understood I wanted to give a "cervical" manipulation.....Blushing and stammering, I explained I meant the neck and NOT, well, the cervix...
No manipulation of any kind was performed on the poor lady that day.
And for many years I would only speak of the "neck".

(dutch put the emphasis on the first syllable, english on the second - for the neck that is)

Bas, yes i remember very well during my undergraduate study , my teachers were different at the how diffferenate between pronanciation of cervix and cervical .

Alea, i did not understand your point.

Anyway , i like to share anothr story happened with my .A 50 years man came to me with his wife for treating his low back pain , i spoke with him for 15 minutes then i asked him to lie down on his back(supine ) in the bed/blinth , the man lied on his abdomin ( Prone) , i got surprised by his wife shout /cry at him telling him to lie supine ,Wow the man was so so afraid from his wife ,,,Hahaha

I was shoked , i stood still watching her while she is criticising him , he did not know how to act ,,,,,,
