I always suspected that a bit of 'get on with it and stop whingeing' can be just as helpful as a soppy empathiser, or better...

Some chronic pain people really test one's empathy, tolerance and patience - the problem is we cannot get inside their pain and cannot know what sort of mid-ocean trench they are in... but the temptation to say 'pull your socks up..' lurks in the recesses somewhere!!

Ditto that Bernard. Also, wasn't there evidence to the contrary lately that points out that early neonatal trauma/pain actually sensitized the system more, not less? This part of the Flor work didn't make sense to me either. :?

As for the 'significant other' part of the study, probably a good thing I stayed single/childless! I have enough trouble remaining emotionally detached (within myself) from (i.e.: "not "feeling") the pain my patients come in with.

Hi all!
Pain patients who get a lot of "emotional support" from their family will sometimes be aburden for the patient, and for the outcome of the treatment. They are not focusing on active coping straegies but just passive ones, and youhave to be"active "to get controll over the pain,in my point of view.
