View Full Version : Values
For PTs/physiotherapists with 5-10 years of working ahead of them:
What are the most significant values that you place on your current job?
My list is something like this: (not in order of importance)
Autonomy of practice.
Listening.
Attention to narrative.
Simple methods for complex issues/conditions.
Respect for one's own efficacy and the patients'.
High placebo levels without compromising logically- based treatments.
Recognising when knowledge levels are decreasing or static.
Educating other PTs and patients in (basic) neurophysiology.
What are the threats to your values?
Nari
Hi Nari :
There are 2 threats for my vlues ;
The first is theose therapists and physicians (60% and 40 %)who put money their first priority .
The second is the patient,s level of culture /education /knowledge .

Nari,
I do not know if these "values" fit the subject but last week I heard some weird things about my practice. :o
The first one was: "Ah, yes The psychiatrist PT."
The second was: "Someone told me you were a bit "special"!" :thumbs_do
The third and worst: "I was a bit scary to meet you, my neighbour told me you were in a cult"
France, isn't really ready to move to brain stuff.

Do you see yourself as a possible means of raising your patients' education/knowledge?
Bernard
I always figured you had hidden talents as well as the obvious ones.
Tell us more about your 'cult'....;) or did they not explain why they thought that?

They are suspicious and explain:
The PT that does quite nothing but talks a lot and has results: Only one possible solution! Cult.
Nari:
It is diffcult to educate illiterate people whom could be decived by other therapist with no-values.
Bernard :
What do they want ?
Are not there any positive imperssions ?
I tried to search for meaning of Cult to find a system for the cure of disease based on dogma set forth by its promulgator <health cults>
is that correct ?

Emad,
It is correct. It needs time to change values.;)
I'm perceived by people as a charlatan but I get some scientific results... So I do not care.

Nari, I don't think I'd be able to improve on your list very much at all.. it's perfect. I would add, understanding the human condition deeper and deeper, socially and evolutionarily.

Nari, as a therapist anticipating another 25 or so years of working I would add steady dependable income to your list. Maybe its a fault of mine for being so tied to the dollar, or maybe its a fact of life. Sometimes I really wonder if I was financially secure whether or not I would continue to practice or not. There are lots of other things I could do...

Money certainly comes into it. I guess that could be a threat to values, in a way.
That is the eternal question: if money was no object how many of us would continue as a PT? It was a major reason for my retirement (amongst others) and thanks to superannuation, money is not an issue; well, relatively speaking.
Not that I could not practise how I wished - that was no problem - but there are so many other things to do with a day.
emad,
That is very true indeed; PTs without values delivering techniques by rote...this is a pity. So lack of motivation/basic education of the people is a clear threat to your clinical practice.
Bernard
Deviation from a perceived norm is always a risk - but who wants to be a sheep?:D
Any more threats to attaining optimum value in clinical practice?
Nari
Hi Nari,
I like your list alot.
A threat for me is compromised patient care for healthy looking numbers.
Cory
Eric and all :
I agree with you completely that steady dependable income from physio, could be an endorsement for supporting practice with values .
Actually , the issue of money is dependable on the whole political system of the country ,society and the route you choosed to practise physiotherapy.Oh ,my English can not enable me to explain my idea ,for example in the Europe and USA the main feature is the privatization of the whole system ,In privatization ,values are at risk to gain money .
In the arnea of comunism or in public hospitals the income is stable but there is risk of efficacy or the work .
In my own view ,there no system which works well ,every system has benefits and drawbacks ,but if the individual has no values in his heart/cortex ,no way.

Emad
