Bernard and somaticers-

Sorry to be the pesky Aussie, but according to your very cute cat, pandiculation is a good old stretch?

Done by most for ages?

Nari,

Not really stretch but complete/whole muscular activity!
It's a kind of checkup/warm up.

Well, for those who don't have a cat, it's a reminder about taking the right length of time and effort to stretch... (love the little cartoon BTW..)

The somatic "cat stretch" has been 'human'-ized; it is done on the floor, on all four sides including prone, and is actually a set of about 7 separate exercises, that integrate F and E, R and SB right and left, and lengthen one side while contracting another, straight line and diagonal. It actually doesn't resemble a cat stretching much at all... I'm guessing it was given that name to package it as a complete in and of itself exercise system..

It is just a human version I found.
What a nice facial expression he has!

I tried to attach the figure here, but I could not.
Bernard,
Do I have to choose some options to accomplish that?

By the way, Takao, thanks for the visuals!

Don't forget: a stretch is a lengthening, which can be applied by another force than yourself.

A pandiculation is a shortening followed by a lengthening (or sometimes the other way around). Not just a lengthening.

My definition of a yawn: a reflex to relieve tension.

What do you think ?

And to avoid confusion:

In the field of Somatics, we talk about:
- self pandiculation -which is what Diane referrred to. The Cat Stretch is a routine of movements to wake up the most important neurological pathways necessary for human motion. It prepares the body for movement, just like a cat, when the cat pandiculates before running after the mouse.......without getting a cramp or spraining his ankle!!

-assisted pandiculation - hands-on process of creating more awareness within movement patterns. These can be localized in partial movement patterns or muscles, as well as performed in what I call 'Master Pandiculations' as whole body movements.
