Greetings form California!

Bernard, many compliments for starting this discussion forum. It is important that people can question/answer and brainstorm their experiences!

I had an interesting client this evening: a 14 year old girl, plays competitive volleyball. Has a coach that shouts at the girls in not a friendly way when they miss the ball.

5 weeks ago, this girl got reprimanded by the coach during the game. It was so intense she started crying. However, 5 minutes later she is playing again and subluxates her patella. Any emotional component behind the physical??

Today, she just got word form the orthopaedic surgeon, who wants to surgically realign the patella.

Easy observation was a young girl stiff from fear and tension. Not able to selectively extend or bend either knee (!) and not able to absorb any shocks (physical and/or emotional).

We did a session esp to release the Traps, scaps and waists, taught her how to independently use her quads or her hamstrings. The result: she was feeling great and much stronger. No pain, radiating with energy.

People who have attended my workshops can probably easily see that with their new tools, they could have given a similar treatment as I did. And prevent an unneccesary surgery that will only create more SMA...!!

Servaas,
I can see much clearly now what the actions behind your words are. That is improvement in my sensory motor learning and decreased SMA in all levels of my functioning.

The potential surgery sounds that not only it can create more SMA but her emotional response. Scapel or scope can be as brutal to her as the coach's shout. She might have associated the physicla procedure with verbal abuse from the coach. That would obviously make the surgery unsuccessful.

Hi again,

I had a such girl last week and I noticed that often they carry a slight internal knee rotation.

She did the exercice you learned to me. The pain went away and she did not, for the moment, experiment again a subluxation.
I saw her, a hour ago.

Hi Rin,

Yes, I saw her again a few days ago. The main difference was that she had regained confidence that her body can play volleyball. Pain is gone. Smiles are back!

Servaas,
How is she handling her coach? Does his shout trigger her startle, or withdrawal, or trauma response at all anymore?

Hi Takao,

Actually, this is really interersting stuff! Here is this 14 year old highly talented volleyball girl. As we discussed before.

Then she shows up at my Somatic Conditioning classes, and the following becomes obvious:
- standing, doing a forward hang, reaching her hands to the floor: at least 30 cm (one foot) from the floor.
- shoulder roatations/ arm rotations with conscious eye patterning: very poor control
- crawling patterns: very poor coordination
- full body extension patterns: very restricted and poorly coordinated
...and the list goes on and on!

She is loving the classes and has been showing up 2/week. She will catch on fast, but it is just amazing to witness how athletic young people are soooo NOT able to move!

Great to hear about the somatic conditioning approach and the results you all get but frustrating at the same time as there is no-where to learn it over here in the UK!!!
