View Full Version : science vs superstition - a quote
The forum has become very quiet over this weekend!
In a book I am reading at present, there are these two sentences:
"It is well known that humans believe what they wish to despite any reasonable evidence, especially if what they experience meshes with some prior belief in how the world ought to work.
We selectively remember events that reinforce our predjudices and ignore contrary evidence."
(from The Astronomy Cafe, a book by Sten Odenwald. MJFBooks, NY,)
Sten is replying to queries about UFOs, abductions, astrology, etc.
How well does this statement fit our work practice as physiotherapists?
How honestly scientific are we, and how much of our clinical reasoning is based on beliefs - if at all??
Nari.
PS: I am sure the bold/italic stuff works, but it never works for me!!

Hi Nari,
The forum is quiet because many of Somasimplers are on Servaas Course at Bowen Island.
About bold and italic... Do not check the 2 first ckeckboxes in the post form.
How to chance beliefs => with another ones! And the new ones must fit in a more realistic theory, the reality?
Hi Bernard
As it turned out, the italics and bold appeared anyway - or did you make them appear?
Where is Bowen Island??
Will be interested in the outcome of Somasimplers' opinion on the course.
Nari
Hi Nari!
Cant that be that the answear to why no one on the Rehab forum wount give you any replay on the" congnition article".Its much easier to fix a "tens muscle"than a tens cognition.
And of course, you are a women, with feeeelings;emooootion, and thats what men (most men have difficult talking about)dont talk about.
In my opinion, its easier to understand the mind -body/body-mind connection if you are in contact with your own feelings.Who are?
If you arent able to see this connection and arent in contact with you own emotions, i think its quite difficult to communicate, as a therapist ,with people (patients) helping them understand ,that theyre way of thinking/emotions/feelings speaks through their body.
Just some thoughts!

Hi Rin
Yes, I did notice the absence of interest in my post on Rehabedge.
It is not very surprising!
You are right - once people are trained to think Cartesian, to think there is a mechanical solution to everything and mechanical solutions are all they have to work with, it would be a challenge to think otherwise.
However, I would like to keep dropping clues on that forum, and maybe some will investigate further.
I also think that some physiotherapists think they have no skills in managing anything other than mechanical matters. They do not know their own skills, as part of being a physio.

Hi Bernard
Me and Diane..?
I would make a good evangelist for persistent pain management and education, depending on the definition of 'good'.
I feel it is so important to understand the concept.

Hello Nari,
Having 2 PCs make me a problem, I haven't seen your new post!
Evangelists  , I'm prying for you! You're entering in the world of productivity and unbelivers. The only God they believe is named dollar.
I'm not a black cat but I'm quite certain that you will experience some problems in your quest!
Good luck!!! :D
Bernard
You are right - and I am the sort of person who might go quietly away in the face of outraged sensibilities and leave posters sighing with relief that pesky Aussie has disappeared...
You may be a black otter?
