View Full Version : Just when I thought I found the perfect place to exercise

Hi there,
About 4 months ago I joined a women's gym, found it very suitable, and really learned to love going regularly. Yesterday I got this in an email, and I'm thinking, Sheeshh!!! Now I don't think I'll ever enjoy going there again, because my political neurotags will be irritated by this info about the partcular religious leanings and interests of the owner of the chain of franchises of which my gym is one, and to whom he likes to donate money:

I am of the generation that fought to make life freer and safer for women and this guy would put us back into the dark ages. :? And I am annoyed that I wasn't smart enough to see the underpinnings of his empire for what they are. I thought I was being so tolerant... attending this gym that seems so woman friendly, even though I knew of its Christian underpinnings; I didn't really understand the depths of how right-wing the guy was. :(

Very disturbing, Diane.
Maybe get out before they have an opportunity to throw you out as a heathen.
What a pity these sorts of people cash in on people's desire to enjoy themselves in a 'safe' environment.

Nari, I guess they think a witch's or a heathen's money is as good as anyone elses'. Glad I don't live 5-600 years ago. I'd be roasting alive for sure.
I took "Curves" off my website, and I won't be sending any more people there without them knowing who's gaining from it.
Did you happen to note the tone of the article? It's a Christian website; they are attacking the feminists for the "tone" of the article they wrote uncovering the money dealings of Heavin (close to the word "heaven"..). They don't deny the allegations at all, it's all fine with them, fits right in with their ideology, they can't imagine why anyone would be upset. It's obviously the feminists that are looney.
So glad you provided this rubbish cube Bernard!
One PO'ed looney feminist,
Diane

Hi Bernard,
Peace and love to you too.
I'm still debating about quitting Curves. The issue has raised some strong opposing neuromodules in my own mind. I'm learning more about my own inclinations than I've had an opportunity to do in many years. Different sides of me are fighting for the right to be heard. I never would have dreamed that the political activist side of me and the physiotherapist side of me would ever collide in such a way. I guess if you live long enough you get to see it all! I'm out there now googling the issues, and it seems I'm not the only one. There is a big stir.
I did find this: http://www.curversforchoice.org/ ..which seems hopeful. Although I haven't had time to thoroughly read all of the links in there.. I am heartened that other women are facing the same inner battles that I am just now: How to be true to our own selves' truth while existing in physical bodies that truly do benefit greatly from this guy's packaged workout concept.
Really, compared to much more life and death struggles women have elsewhere in the world I feel blessed to be dealing with such a minor one. :?
All the other stuff you said about all religions preaching the good stuff while practicing the bad stuff, too true. It seems like this is the greater species neuromatrix within which we are embedded. Within this context, woman has always been "the Other".
Feminism has always been about two main things (among other things):
1. enlightening individual female minds about the tenacity of, vicious effects on us of, and sheer idiocy of perpetuating, such embedded and unconscious male-dominated power structures in the world. (Lessons in Power Over)
2. giving individual women the conceptual tools to make their own choices about who they are: defined by such structures' definitions, as "Other"? Or make a new Self definition that serves you better as a human being, not just a female animal, a uterus with arms and legs, at the mercy of that 30-40 year span of fertility, in an already overpopulated planet. (Lessons in Empowerment)
Having the right whether or not to carry an embryo to term has been a hard fought hard won battle in this context. I really do not want to personally support erosion of these legal gains.
Cheers,
Diane

Emad, thank you for replying. I am sure Bernard can move this out to the Silent forum, or just start a new one there, and we Simplers can go talk where it's more private, where one doesn't have to self-censor.
