View Full Version : Who feels the outcome?
Hi all :
I use very well reflection on my practice ,so i noticed ;
Some of patients wait me to say to them :arrow: yes, you are more better ,your pain decreased .
at the other hand :arrow: i wait the patient to say ,yes pain decreased .
Do you think it is better to say to the patient your pain decreased /wait him to express about that progress?
cheers

Emad -
It is far better that the patient reports it him/herself; if they do not say there is less pain, maybe ask them how they feel.
Best not to mention The Pain...
Nari
Hi emad!
The first question i ask my patients when visiting me is"How is your body today?And how have your body been since i saw you last time?
If their in more or less pain, increased function etc they will tell me so.
I cant tell them about their pain,but i can se and feel if the body is functioning better then the last time,which the patient might not be able to be aware of.Pain can increase ,but the movments can be increased to the better!

RIN
Hi Rin & Nari;
What i mean from that topic ,sometimes the patient wants to hear from me as ,his health provider, that his pain decreased .
even if he feels his pain decreased ,he doubt that .
sometimes ,i feel thus depends on the patient education and cultural level.
cheers

Hi emad!
How is it possible for you to feel his feelings????Pain is a subjectiv experience!What you can see or feel as a health provider is sometimes,the connection between increased movment(passiv or active)and decreased or increased pain .

RIN
Hi rin;
you are absoultely right , but psychologically , they want to hear the word of you are better ,your pain decreased .
sometimes , i feel their pain will decrease more steeply if i said to them you are more better , as a type of assurance.
some patients tell me through our subjective narrting yes , i am more better , my pain decreased ,then askes what do you see through your work has my pain decreased .
Let s me tell you Rin:
Sometimes ,patients i meet before are still in pain ,all objective tests assure that ,they go to visit a Professor in orthopedics ,he teels them YES your pain is not exist .stop taking drugs .
then ,they return home stopping drugs , one week all pain subside.
is not that strange ?But some cases ,really few , visit us as physiotherapist telling us stories like that ,but their pain is still.
cheers

Emad,
I agree with Nari that it is better that our patients tell us how our session is going and how he/she is responding to it. And I think that it is our job that we coach them to improve their awareness of internal and external change happening.
If patients want you to confirm that how they are feeling (feeling of improvement) is right, you will need to enducate them any honest feeling is right. Many people seem numb to their feelings and not confident in themselves---low self-esteem. And they become good at hiding their honest feelings, worrying about how others see them, and trying nice to everybody else. Again it is a part of our job that we allow them to experience from a first person perspective and respect that experience. So they can become more in-tune with their inner selves.
