hi all;

I have a sciatic patient with severe pain ,accompanied with hyperthesia of the front thigh aspect , as well she is diabetic insulin-dependant .

Do you think injection of drugs through the gluteal muscle could evoke more pain ??

Do you think insulin injection through that hyperthesia Quadrecips could evoke more pain ??

Maybe she has managed to inject a few cutaneous branches of her femoral nerve.

There are a number of possibilities - but I don't think injecting the thigh would cause sciatica. Does the pain run posteriorly or laterally in the upper leg?

However, if there is a relationship between her sciatic pain and injecting, she might try another spot for injecting. I would think it is unrelated to the reason for the sciatic pain, but may be adding to her pain experience - ie increasing sensitivity. Other than that, I'm not sure without seeing the woman.

Hi Nari ;
Right, like you it did not begin as a result of needle /injection injury .

The main point i am trying to discuss giving injection within a painul area could add more pain and sentivity .

But may be , that hyperthesia of the quadriceps is caused by injection of insulin .

The pain is referred to the whole posterior aspect of the thigh and leg , the knee anterior aspect also , may be referred ,may be a local knee joint problem .

Nari,

Normally nurses learn to avoid injections in painful areas but in such cases it becomes difficult. Patients that are doing self-injections are not often well trained and able to avoid these areas.

Since pain is a perception. Maybe the patient can tell us if injection into the mentioned area did provoke more pain or not.
