Hallo Somasimplers
I need help with a pt 2 weeks post bypass. He was actually under anaesthetic for a hip replacement when his heart bombed out. So,he can not walk for rehab..hip is too painful.Otherwise he's doing fine, cardiologist is happy, but I'm not. What can I do for him to get him to be more active without increasing his pain? I need to get him fit and strong so that the planned hip replacement can be done within a few weeks.
Any tips?

Hello Mariette,
Was the hip replaced? In your post it is net clearly stated.
First of all => Breathing. :shade: It works for pain, heart...
Hi Mariette
Two weeks post CABG; and this guy is brave enough to have the THR go ahead?
What a stalwart man. He must be in a lot of pain to agree to go ahead; so his rehab will have to be largely NWB.
The exercise bike comes to mind..and if you have access to a hydro pool, a careful routine might help here; he would need to remain out of the water to his waist, and have an OK from the cardiac surgeon. The other thing which comes to mind is a fitness ball. How is he recovering from the CABG?
Otherwise he could do work with his other leg, arms etc in sitting and lying, to keep them in a bit of shape. According to our protocol here, he has to do only bilateral arm work (never unilateral) for six weeks to prevent sternal separation, but you are probably aware of that.
Tricky one!
Hope this is helpful but you probably have thought of these suggestions anyway...

Hi Nari and Bernard
Thanks for the ideas.
No Bernard, he has to recover first before they can do the hip replacement. As I tried to get across in my previous post he was under anaesthetic when he started having problems with his heart. So they woke him up and the next day went in for db bypass surgery. So we(him and myself) are trying to get him strong and fit enough so that he can go for the planned hip.(I would actually like to prove everybody wrong and get the hip sorted out by itself!(Ha) Maybe it was his perfusion all along that caused the deterioration of his femoral artery etc. After 3 sessions he is already walking alot better.)
I tried a lot of what you suggested... it is just good to know that I'm on the right track.
Thanks for picking your brains.:p Mariette

Hi all
Life is of course not always easy. Thanks Nari "the pool" was a great suggestion, that helped the pt with walking on land a lot easier.I almost forgot I had one as it was supposed to still be winter here...
